Lost all Substance

Every time I see a remake of an English film into Hindi, all I do is roll my eyes and think “gosh there they go again, copying Hollywood’s work and making it Bollywood”. For me that’s what they are known for because every single time I see some dumb Hindi trailer on TV it’s just like every English movie we have seen. Is it that they aren’t creative enough to come up with their own script? I think not, especially since there were movies like Black, Pa that came out.

Anyway that was not the basis of me writing this post. It seems, that we have certain people in this country who walk around like they are the queen of England, all because either they are in some ridiculous magazine or because they own it. Yes, I know everyone reading this nailed it and guessed which magazine I am referring to. First of all it was a direct copy of the Hello magazine in the UK and secondly since we don’t seem to be able to find interesting people, oh wait let me rephrase that, since we cannot find scandalous news to publish like they do abroad, the local Hi magazine is based around taking pictures of people who go for parties and to clubs.

That concept really gets old dear editors, or do you promise people that you will put their pictures in so that they purchase the magazine? When I was recently at the salon I read their magazine after some time and it hasn’t changed a bit. There’s still a horde of pictures of teeny boppers, out and about and all of our lovely editor’s high society friends all posed up for the camera. And then there was the “editors” pick of the best dressed women of 2010 and boy didn’t I laugh like crazy. It was even funnier that most of the women who were at the salon laughed along with me at what a ridiculous choice made.

I have to agree that some women rightfully deserved the spot as they truly were glamour queens in my books, but sigh…. There was one young lady (I won’t mention names)  whom I have come across quite a few times who is in a lot of peoples books a clear example for the phrase (money cannot buy you class or style) who was highlighted in the magazine. A lot of people who has seen her would never note her as a “best dressed” candidate as she is, just downright “goday” and dresses like a grandmother and nothing like her age. The tragic part of this whole thing is that I know that the “editor” and this girl are good friends and they party out quite frequently. So dear editor, is your choice biased then?

So what is the outcome of this magazine? NOTHING! We read articles about women, who were probably born here or whose parents are Sri Lankan and they live in the states and they tend to be rich and powerful. We don’t want to read about people who have lived there all their lives and made it big somewhere in Timbuktu.  As Sri Lankans we want to read about people who have lived here, studied here or abroad and made it big here and made our country proud. We don’t want to read about some person whose half Sri Lankan, lived all their lives in the states and made it big there. I mean like we care!

So my advice dear editor, drop the act, stop prancing around town acting like a teenager and behave your age first of all and also try your level best to produce a magazine with some substance.

Taste Of Colombo 2011

As a person who loves her food, I think we need a really good food festival which can cater to everyone. Not just the 5 stars or the somewhat expensive places. We need one location in which we can eat from the wade guy from galle face to probably hot butter cuttle fish from chinese dragon. Hawkers street which is conducted by the CMC on a monthly basis started off with a lot of potential but then just died down because they just continued it for the sake of doing it. I think the following venture from the guys from Lanka Event Management is definitely going to be a success as they are doing it with the intention of continuing it annually.

Taste of Colombo is the upcoming Colombo Street Festival, organized with the intentions of making it an Annual International Event that will attract the tourists, local community and also local businessmen. The event is produced by Lanka Event Management team; the event management arm of Lanka Hotels and Travels (Private) Limited which is a subsidiary of Lanka Ice Holdings.

Taste of Colombo is much different to a standard food festival as it brings together the National Taste in terms of history, heritage, arts, crafts and culture. This venture is set forth with the intentions of promoting local tourism to the international customer while creating a gathering place for the local community as well. The event will be held for three days and is open to the public, both local and foreign, absolutely Free of Charge.

Invited approximately 75-100 different food vendors ranging from star category hotels, leading restaurants, catering services, bakers, pastry shops as well as street stalls to participate at this year’s inaugural event. There will also be an equal representation of stalls showcasing traditional trade along the lines of batik, handloom, paintings, wood carvings, handicrafts, masks, tea, spices, ayurveda and travel agents …etc. A special segment of cultural activities such as a mini-perehera, puppet show, traditional dances and drum acts, papare band and street drama (veedi natya) is also lined up on a daily basis to ensure that the foreign patrons are treated to a complete array of local tastes including entertainment as well.

Not forgetting our love for the game of Cricket as well, there will be two giant screens playing the Finals of the ICC World Cup on the last day of the festival which will convert into a complete street party. Dining at Urban Kitchen

I love food, but then again who doesn’t? When Urban Kitchen first opened up I was very impressed. It looked like a food court with a lot of class to it. The first time I ate there I was amazed at the quality of the food. The service was excellent and the waiters were so friendly and the food was simply delicious. Some time back waffle introduced  rice ball and I to the chocolate cupcake they had there and it was simply divine.

I don’t exactly remember when it was opened but i guess its been a couple of years since its been in existence. The last time I visited UK was a few weeks back. It was a Sunday and there was hardly a crowd which was quite surprising to me as I always remember the place being packed.

So rice ball and I were accompanied by two of our friends “brown bread” and brownie. We found some comfortable couches and relaxed into them. Since we were famished after an eventful day of pictionary we ordered some wine, a pizza, fried calamari and another chicken dish which I don’t remember as it was quite forgetful. It took us half an hour after we were ready to order for the waiter to take our orders. They completely ignored us even though we got the attention of three different waiters and each one kept saying they will take it soon. My patience was on a very very thin line as I was getting angrier every second i got hungrier.  It came to that point that rice ball walked up to the manager and went can you please take our order since everyone else is ignoring us. The shocked manager didn’t really know what to do with himself and since he was a very friendly person he made sure we were looked into immediately.

The pizza came out in a mere 15 to 20 mins and we were quite impressed. It tasted quite delicious and riceball and brownie were quite happy with their meal. Now while this was happening BB and I were waiting and waiting and waiting for our food. I mean how long does friend calamari take to fry? I have made it at home and it doesnt take too long. After one hour of waiting I couldnt take it anymore and brownie went up to the head chef and told them in the most politest way that we were still waiting for our food.

So when we finally got it, it all looked very appetizing. And then we tasted it. My calamari was RAW! it was like chewing rubber. To be honest rubber would have been easier. So after all that wait I got raw food. We returned it and ordered the safest option. A pizza. Atleast I knew that would be cooked.

All in all I had a terrible experience there, specially for someone who loved their food and always promoted it. Its weird how no matter how many wonderful times you have in one place, one bad experience can put you off completely.

So if I was to rate UK I would give it a

1/2 out of 5 for service

2 out of 5 for food

Why IIFA rocked in Style…

Most people have been writing so many negative things in terms of the IIFA awards, that has left many people confused. I think that it comes to that point that people just believe what they hear and read and no one really knows the true story.. Lets start from the beginning. Sri Lanka won the bid to be the host country not for any political reasons.. we won it because the IIFA body (Wizcraft) themselves believed that we were the best country for the year 2010.  Im sure many of you know we were the only host country to ever pull it off in two months.. and many people obviously believed this will crash and burn but funnily enough nothing of that sort happened. The event was a success in every way shape and form.

So how did it all start? Well i think firstly the team put together from every organization to handle this event was the best of the best. They worked tirelessly for the past two months, forgetting that essential necessity every human being needs “sleep” and made sure that it wont go in vain. Yes there were lots of people who laughed at the fact that there were calls for volunteers to help out and luxury vehicles needed for the stars. But the funniest part out of this all is that we ultimately had over 400 volunteers helping out and also each star had a luxury vehicle to drive them around.

So yeah Shahrukh didnt come.. but hey.. the last IIFA awards he participated for was 5 years ago in Yorkshire.. and because he didnt turn up in Sri Lanka people are screaming bloody murder.. I mean can you blame the guy? The last time he came here he was pretty much blown into pieces, and we talk shit about him not coming down this year.

The way Sugathadasa was transformed for the awards itself was just breathtaking that i dont even have words to describe it.. The stage, set up and lighting was out of this world and theres noway any of this could be possible if it wasn’t for the team involved. The tireless dedication and the hard work itself was the reason for the tremendous success along with the business and hotel community helping out in every way possible.

Yes the MOU was leaked to the papers with a whole lot more but non of that can dampen the spirits of the people involved. The fashion show was just out of this world and so was the final awards. For everyone who wants to watch it on tv, it will be tele casted on Star and Rupavahini on the 4th of July and trust me when i tell you this.. the sets were just amazing and so was the show.

So a small word to everyone who has a lot to say about it.. there were people who still paid $10,000 for tickets just to watch the show and when you watch it on tv you will understand why they did that.

For the people who said no stars arrived and i could have sworn one of our very own had said saif ali khan didnt arrive.. well get your facts straight mister coz he was one of the A list stars that performed for the awards. So yeah we are gonna hear a month or so more of people ranting and raving about IIFA being a waste and a loss… but then again what else are we Sri Lankans good at other than pointing our fingers at others and complaining?

IIFA madness

Whats all this huff about since of late regarding the Indian Awards?? Well for all of you who dont know whats happening in our little island, the International Indian Film Awards is coming down to Sri Lanka this June. All i can say is theres a lot of planning going into the stages of doing the events for it which spans close to 20 events in just 3 days. Some may think if we even have the man power or equipment to do this successfully. But what i have heard from my sources s that they are bringing down most of the state of the art equipments and stuff…

Whatever said and done I think its superb that this is happening in our country. We need everything we can get to let the world know that we are war free and that we are one Island with a thousand treasures. So anyway it turns out that all the stars will be present at this weekend and theres gonna be whole heaps of events.. and even the cricket match and a little birdie told me that Sharukh might be in a team..

So anyway show your support for the awards and join this facebook group and show that you support Sri Lanka for bringing it down.  So if you can do what we all did.. change your profile pic on fb to the iifa logo 🙂 yes i know its very far fetched but we did it 🙂 and NO im not a bollywood fan…. just being supportive and check this website for more updates and details.

International Indian Film Academy in Sri Lanka

So it was confirmed today that the International Indian Film Academy Awards also known as iiFA will be held in Colombo this June. Sri Lanka Tourism Promotions Bureau has won a very difficult bid against some of the most renowned countries just to host this years iiFA awards in Colombo Sri Lanka in June.

It is estimated that a total of 300 Bollywood stars will be attending this event and some Hollywood figures (wont say who) will be attending as well. The International Indian Film Academy is a first-of-its-kind effort to promote Indian Cinema globally, thus reaching out to millions of its fans.

It’s the celebration of Indian Cinema. The International Indian Film Academy.  Propelling Indian Cinema to glorious pinnacles beyond Indian shores. As global cinema rapidly emerges, a prominent place for Indian Cinema is reserved. IIFA constantly endeavours to showcase to the world the wealth of talent Indian Cinema has to offer.

Funnily enough we had to beat the favourite seoul South korea for this. I guess in a way this is going to put Sri Lanka on the map as an ideal destination to visit during the time. Lets just hope we dont have another  bunch of psychos who start some stupid group and try and stop this too.

Marriageable age limit to come down in Sri Lanka

This country is going to the dogs aint it? The rules being imposed these days from our governement has been fantastic. As me and the people in my office are very good at finding interesting articles to laugh about, we came across this article in the Daily Mirror. “The Government is to bring amendments to the existing marriage laws by reducing the marriageable age to 16 years from the existing 18, Additional Solicitor General, Palitha Fernando said”

If someone can explain to me why our hare brained governement is planning to make this final i would very much appreciate it. What happened to the freedom education? What are we turning into the middle east countries? whats next? women have to cover themselves from head to toe? What about goin to school and getting a proper education for your self. By doing this you are just taking away the entire life for your daughter.

This is definitely a country thats moving backwards. I mean lets think about it a little bit here, are we going back to the stone ages in which we pretty much had nothing to do but get married to each other? If porn sites are banned then why the hell are they allowing the marriage limit to keep getting lower? To tell our youngsters “Dont watch sex but get married early and experience it” ??? is that the message we are trying to send out?

Sometimes we make so many mistakes when we are young. We believe that our school sweethearts are the one for us to live with for the rest of our lives. With rules like this, we are just helping kids to make mistake and get married and then wonder “why?” for the rest of their lives.

Gaming Community in Sri Lanka

Being a typical kind of girl who wasn’t that into these so called great games such as Counter Strike, Dota and Call of duty, I wasn’t all too interested in the progress or what happened and who raped whomJ in all these matches. Having two brothers who have an undying passion for gaming has always made it revolve in my life no matter how much I want to just shut it out.

And then came Tin Man J a person I have known for the past 6 years or so… I knew he loved warcraft long time back and he promised to teach me.. But since I have kicked his butt around in everything else.. (Quake) he realized it won’t look too good if I whooped his ass in this too. So here I am sad as a puppy because no one is taking the time to teach me.

My two brothers, fellow Vegeta and Frostbite were big time CS players and frosty tried to teach me but I seemed to have serious problems with aiming, so he gave up on me too. When the tournaments came along.. lets just say some were really well organized, I seemed to be one of the only girls there and even though I did feel awkward at first, the thrill of watching these guys play is amazing… I think my all time favourite CS player will always be Killerlot.. Sorry for the other guys.. I guess I haven’t noticed you guys play. 😦

From the very beginning I always thought gaming was a complete and utter waste of time, and to some extent I still believe so.. but I understand why most guys get addicted to it and make their lives revolve around it. It’s the thrill of the game I guess. I do believe that most of you guys do waste a lot of time on it when u can do a lot more with your time, but I understand to some extent the hype of it.. I guess I wont really understand it till someone takes the time to teach me 🙂

All in all i have met some superb people through that… i dont think ill remember everyones names but just a small mention.. other than for my two dopey brothers ofcourse… tin-man, breaker, scala, ryan, killerlot, liverpool, The entire FEAR team i cant remember… 🙂 ice man, shit… i cant remmeber.. all the guys i play poker with 🙂
